On this album, Lund took a turn from his previous writing topics and settled on one theme for this record: historical military songs. \u201cThe Horse Soldier album apparently came out of left field for people,\u201d said Lund. \u201cWe had just come off two straight gold records which both surprised me in terms of their commercial success. I just kept writing what I was feeling, and what I was feeling was a bunch of military history songs (apologies to Johnny Horton and Steve Earle). I\u2019m really proud of sticking to my guns and releasing this album just how I envisioned it because to this day I have people tell me all the time that of all our records this is their favourite. It seems to be a very interesting mirror for the listener. Many people have told me they love it as an \u2018anti-war\u2019 record yet I\u2019ve also had a ton of feedback from military guys, retired and active, who appreciate the acknowledgement of their work. I don\u2019t know, maybe it\u2019s both. I didn\u2019t really have an agenda in mind at all when I wrote it other than presenting a bunch of war stories from different perspectives.\u201d
